Homeschooling May 15, 2011

Filed under: Homeschooling — janelmartin @ 10:31 am

We went to the Christian Homeschooling Association of Pennsylvania Convention on Friday and Saturday.  Being there solidified my decision that we should homeschool our children.  I want to follow the scripture in Deuteronomy 6 when it says:

“Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.  These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children.  Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

I was excited to see all of the curriculum options and glad that we don’t have to choose one for a couple of years.  For now I will use the curriculum that I used when I taught preschool to start to introduce educational concepts to Calvin.  I will be looking for something to help with Bible teaching, as that isn’t covered in the preschool curriculum.  This is quite a journey God has been leading me on.   A couple of years ago I’d never thought I’d be homeschooling.  God is good and I’m glad He is leading me on the paths He desires for our family.

Dear Jane Quilt May 9, 2011

Filed under: Quilts — janelmartin @ 12:05 pm

In October 2010 I joined a group of women who was meeting together to encourage each other as we all made our own Dear Jane quilt.  It seems kind of silly- a quilt support group?  But this quilt is no normal undertaking. The Dear Jane quilt is made up of 5″ square blocks and you need 225 of them.  And the beautiful scalloped border contains pieced triangles.

Yesterday my friend, April came over and we worked on our blocks together.  It was kind of a mini support group.  We decided to get together every month and work on blocks together. I finished two blocks in our 3 1/2 hours together.  After the kids went to bed I worked on three more blocks, which I finished this morning.  So here are pictures of what blocks I finished over the past few days.  Later I’ll post pictures of the blocks I’ve already finished.

5 more dresses finished May 5, 2011

Last week I realized that Karen is leaving for Africa in June, not July.  This difference of one month has made me get a little stressed out in my dress and doll making.  I haven’t even started working on the shorts and bears.  Over the weekend I have finished five more dresses, so now I have 10 dresses finished.  My goal was 30, so I only have 20 more to make.  Time will tell if I can get that many done.

Pea Trellises May 3, 2011

It was such a beautiful day outside that I decided to get my trellises up for our peas. Thanks to Dean's parents for the twine. It's what they cut off of their horses hay. The peas growing in this picture are Wando.

This is where the Dark Seeded Early Perfection peas were planted. I was planning on comparing the two types of peas, but when the guy was putting the gutters on he stepped in this dirt a lot. This is also where my black beans will be planted.

Capes May 2, 2011

I have a client who wants me to make capes for her son’s birthday party in June.  I bought the fabric a week ago, but before I started on making her order I made one for Calvin.  This way I could see exactly how I wanted to make the birthday party ones.  As an added bonus Calvin is about the same size as my client’s daughter, so I’ll have a starting point as to what size to make her.
