When we first decided to homeschool Dean said that he would teach something to the boys on Saturdays.  We have been discussing our vision for why we are homeschooling and what we want homeschooling to look like in our home. A couple of weeks ago Dean decided he would like to do science and art activities with the boys.  And so it began….

ImageThe first lesson was about primary colors and secondary colors.  Besides introducing a new concept it also reinforced colors which Calvin has a hard time remembering.

After mixing colored water they mixed paint and painted pictures. I missed that part because little Nathaniel was hungry 🙂

Declutter, Get Organized and Keep it That Way June 15, 2012

Filed under: clutter free — janelmartin @ 8:20 am

If you have ever been to my house you know that Dean  and I don’t keep an organized, clutter free home.  My dream house is beautifully decorated with everything ( well, almost everything) in its place.  It’s a home where my children won’t grow up surrounded by clutter.

So I decided that for the rest of 2012 I’m going to work extremely hard to make my house more the home of my dreams.  The first thing I’m going to do to put me on the right track is to get rid of about 1/3 of what we own.  As an incentive I will be selling these items through various yard sales and the money earned will be used for a family trip to Lancaster  The more money I earn, the more things we will be able to do.

These are the boxes that are currently in my kitchen filled with items to sell.  It’s a good start.  Now I just need to take pictures and put them on the fb yard sale sites I belong to.

If you are good at being clutter-free or organized please leave a comment with some advice!

Painting May 8, 2012

ImageThis afternoon Calvin asked to paint. At the same time I heard sounds of Wesley finally waking from him 3 1/2 hour nap.  I was in a great mood for my kids to get messy, so I thought it would be a good day to introduce Wesley to the world of painting.  They both had a wonderful time!  Now we just need to buy more paint, since we used most of our supply.Image

Baby Preparations/Canning Soup March 5, 2012

Filed under: canning — janelmartin @ 11:41 am

I’ve been meaning to can some soup all winter, but I haven’t done it until now.  I made a list of things I want to get done before the baby comes.  Making meals ahead of time is one of my major goals and canning soup can be done months before we want to eat it.

On Friday two friends came over and we made Cheesy Cheeseburger Soup and Vegetable Beef Soup.  It took us all morning to get the soups mixed together even though we had everything chopped.  We had some of the cheeseburger soup for lunch.  After lunch, we started on the canning.  We only finished one batch before everyone went home.  It takes about 2 hours to can the one kind of soup and an hour for the other.  I canned two batches on Friday and put the rest in the fridge for Saturday.  I also decided to make Chunky Chicken soup and can that on Sat.

Saturday was filled with cooking and canning soup.  It’s an all day process, but now we have 17 Quarts of Vegetable Beef Soup and 8 Quarts of Chunky Chicken.  I plan on adding noodles to the chicken soup when we are ready to eat it, so it will be like chicken noodle soup.  That will provide us with lots of meals in the next year or so. Yum!

Reading Together February 24, 2012

I didn’t realize until a few years ago that all parents don’t spend time reading to their children.  This kind of shocked me since reading to my kids is something we do everyday, several times a day that adds up to a good chunk of our time spent together.  Both the boys love looking at books on their own.  I am excited to see their interest in books develop.  Reading is such an important skill and to enjoy reading is a blessing.

Valentine’s Day February 17, 2012

Filed under: Uncategorized — janelmartin @ 7:01 am

We didn’t really do much for Valentine’s Day this year.  Dean and I decided to buy each other a spice cabinet- very romantic, huh?  Calvin and I did make the traditional heart shaped cake.  I remember making this cake with my mom growing up.

The icing was a little runny and I didn’t have any more sugar to add to it.  Calvin enjoyed watching it puddle on the bottom and adding marshmallows to it!
